3D GEL NUMBER PLATES

3D GEL NUMBER PLATES

Green Number Plates Go Live

Also known as 3D number plates, 3D gel number plates are licence plates with raised, domed 3D gel text. At Perfect Plates we only use the best quality characters on our 3D Gel Number Plates. The Gel number plate characters are bonded using industry standard adhesive vinyl and utilise a top layer of Polyurethane resin. These letters are applied to the surface of the acrylic number plates. 3D gel number plates are durable, eye-catching, and easy to read, making them a popular choice among car owners in the UK.

Quality Control at Perfect Plates

We only use the highest quality, British manufactured, components in the production of our 3D gel number plates. In addition to this, we employ a stringent quality control process to ensure that all components and number plates meet our standards for quality. Our mission is not only to make your gel plates stand out, but we also aim for every customer to be completely satisfied with their experience and the quality of our product.

Are Gel Number Plates Legal In The UK?

All the motoring rules, laws, and regulations in the United Kingdom come under the purview and jurisdiction of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or the DVLA. As with all things related to the government, the DVLA and its personnel are very strict as far as the legality of plates is concerned.

Gel Number Plates, like any other legally permitted number plates, need to correspond to the BSAU145e standard. The new standard came into effect on 1st September 2021 and should be followed by all vehicles that are currently operating on UK roads. If the BSAU145e standard is not adhered to, you can invite legal fines and suspensions from the authorities

The question that everyone wants an answer to is the following- Are 3D Gel Number Plates legal in the UK? The answer to the same is a resounding YES! The DVLA permits the use of gel number plates as long as they stick to the following legal guidelines-

  •  The figures or characters that are displayed and cut out in ‘gel form’ should not form a pattern. They must be legible in the ‘Charles Wright’ font that the DVLA allows for
  • The colour that is to be used on the gel number plates should be black for both the front and the back. There should not be any other colour that the characters should come in.
  • The background colour of the number plates should be ‘white’ in the front of the car and ‘yellow’ at the rear end of the car. No other colours are permitted by the DVLA.
  • The DVLA states that the material of the number plates should be reflective in nature. This is perfect for gel number plates as they are finished in a reflective glossy finish.

The DVLA is very strict in terms of how the number plates should look. This is primarily because it wants the number plates to be completely legible and visible to other motorists on the road. One more reason is that the DVLA wants that the identification of the vehicle through its number plates becomes easy for law enforcement agencies, traffic policemen, and security cameras. Number plates should be helpful in providing vehicle identification. To see more please use our Online Number Plate Builder.

What are 3D Domed Gel Number Plates?

3D Gel Number Plates are made by covering sheet cut characters with a polyurethane gel resin which gives them the raised profile from the number plate. The characters are a truly custom finish in high gloss piano black. Make your number plates come alive with 3d domed gel plates and be the envy of other motorists. These are at the top of the table when it comes to premium 3D Gel & 4D Acrylic number plates.

Please note that by law we include our company name, postcode and BSAU number on the plates. The font style for all our plates is Charles Wright which is the legal UK road font.

The standard UK size for number plates are 520mm by 111mm. Please note this will vary if you opt for a shortened plate. Shortened plates are cut down to a unique size depending on the length of your registration. If you require a specific size, please state this in the special requests box after clicking purchase. Legally, your number plates cannot have a margin any less than 11mm.

We stock and sell fixing kits which have been rigorously tested to ensure they provide the best mounting solutions for you to attach your new number plates to your vehicle. We have two options:

Sticky pad fixing kits include a pack of 10 industrial strength sticky pads, which will be enough to secure both a front and rear number plate to your vehicle.

Standard screw fixing kits include 4 screws, 2 white screw caps and 2 yellow screw caps to blend in with your number plates.

Tamper proof fixing kits include a tamper proof hex key and self tapping screws plus a selection of coloured plastic caps to hide the head of the screws once its in position.

UK law stipulates that number plates must display writing in an untitled font called Charles Wright. The letters and numbers must comply with specific spacing and alignment.

The current vehicle registration number format was introduced in 2001. It consists of:

  • 2 letters (these refer to the region in the country where your vehicle was first registered)
  • 2 numbers (these tell you when it was issued)
  • 3 letters are chosen at random

By law, the DVLA requires the number plates on your vehicles to meet the following conditions:

  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (for the front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (for the rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern
  • be marked to show who supplied the number plate
  • be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021

The characters on your number plate must not be removable or reflective. If your number plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.

On your number plate, the law allows you to have 3D (raised characters), certain flags, symbols and identifiers. If you have a zero-emission vehicle, your number plate is allowed to display a green flash.

Moreover, it is illegal to disfigure number plates in a way which makes them hard to read. For example, if your private plate has the number ‘1’, you cannot place a screw or bolt on top of it to make it look like the letter ‘I’.
