4D Acrylic Number Plates

4D number plates are the latest addition to number plate designs. They are made from 3mm black acrylic characters, stuck to our premium acrylic blank plates using a high strength 3M adhesive. As a 4D number plate maker we know that DVLA state that ‘number plates can be 3D’, therefore 4D number plates are fully road legal and made to British Standards (BS AU 145e)

4D Number Plates. Are They Legal?

DVLA has deemed 4D number plate designs as road legal if they conform to the government regulations. These rules are designed to ensure the plates are easy to read by authorities and other motorists during both day and night.

Providing they conform to the rules regulating UK number plates, 4D number plates are entirely legal to use on your car. For example, the acrylic characters must be presented in black on a white plate at the front of your vehicle and black on a yellow plate at the rear, both manufactured from reflective material. The acrylic characters must also follow the rules that dictate the measurements of letters and numbers, as well as the margins surrounding them.

4D Number Plates. What Are They ?

4D number plates are simply the ‘bigger brother’ of 3D gel plates. They are typically manufactured using professionally laser cut acrylic letters as opposed to the raised gel letters found on 3D plates. While the characters are presented in the compulsory black typeface, they can be backed by another colour beneath for a stylish ‘4D Neon’ effect not commonly seen on the road. This can be perfect if you’re looking to show off your new private plate and catch the attention of other motorists. We have the 4D neon plates for sale on this website.

This process next-level depth to your plates – Safe to pressure wash – Doesn’t fade in the sun – Industrial strength adhesive bonding.

Please note that by law we include our company name, postcode and BSAU number on the 4D number plates. The font style for all our plates is Charles Wright which is the legal UK road font, compliant with the law. To see more please use our number plate builder.

The standard UK size for number plates are 520mm by 111mm. Please note this will vary if you opt for a shortened plate. Shortened plates are cut down to a unique size depending on the length of your registration. If you require a specific size, please state this in the special requests box after clicking purchase. Legally, your number plates cannot have a margin any less than 11mm.

We stock and sell fixing kits which have been rigorously tested to ensure they provide the best mounting solutions for you to attach your new number plates to your vehicle. We have two options:

Sticky pad fixing kits include a pack of 10 industrial strength sticky pads, which will be enough to secure both a front and rear number plate to your vehicle.

Standard screw fixing kits include 4 screws, 2 white screw caps and 2 yellow screw caps to blend in with your number plates.

Tamper proof fixing kits include a tamper proof hex key and self tapping screws plus a selection of coloured plastic caps to hide the head of the screws once its in position.

UK law stipulates that number plates must display writing in an untitled font called Charles Wright. The letters and numbers must comply with specific spacing and alignment.

The current vehicle registration number format was introduced in 2001. It consists of:

  • 2 letters (these refer to the region in the country where your vehicle was first registered)
  • 2 numbers (these tell you when it was issued)
  • 3 letters are chosen at random

By law, the DVLA requires the number plates on your vehicles to meet the following conditions:

  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (for the front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (for the rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern
  • be marked to show who supplied the number plate
  • be marked with a British Standard number – this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021

The characters on your number plate must not be removable or reflective. If your number plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.

On your number plate, the law allows you to have 3D (raised characters), certain flags, symbols and identifiers. If you have a zero-emission vehicle, your number plate is allowed to display a green flash.

Moreover, it is illegal to disfigure number plates in a way which makes them hard to read. For example, if your private plate has the number ‘1’, you cannot place a screw or bolt on top of it to make it look like the letter ‘I’.
